Arunachalam Temple – Arunachalam or Tiruvannamalai is one of India’s most venerated sacred sites. Where Lord Shiva is believed to reside in the form of a mountain, according to Hindu Puranas. This mountain is considered to be a manifestation of Shiva Lingam (Agni Lingam).ย
The term “Arunachalam” means “Red Hill,” where “Aruna” translates to “red” and “Achalam” means “immovable” or “hill.” The hill is believed to have been formed from fire.
Situated in the tranquil town of Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, Arunachalam Temple, referred to as Arunachalam or Tiruvannamalai or Annamalaiyar Temple.
Emergence of Arunachalam:
As per hindu scriptures a dispute taken place between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding their supremacy out of their ego. To resolve the disagreement, Lord Shiva manifested as a towering column of fire extending from the earth to the sky. He commanded both Brahma and Vishnu to locate its top and bottom. Vishnu transformed into a boar to search for the base, while Brahma assumed the form of a swan to seek the top.
After an extended search, both Brahma and Vishnu recognized the futility of their efforts and offered their reverence to the boundless form of Lord Shiva. Moved by their humility, Lord Shiva bestowed his divine blessings upon them. The location where the column of fire manifested is now called Arunachala, and a temple was constructed around this sacred hill.
Girivalam:
The most interesting part in Arunachal is Girivalam. The ritual of circumambulating the sacred Annamalai Hill is known as Girivalam. The route around the hill measures about 14 kilometers and is regarded as exceptionally auspicious. Devotees often undertake this sacred pilgrimage, particularly on full moon days, believing it to purify the soul and confer spiritual benefits.
Asta Lingams:
The Asta Lingams of Arunachala, eight revered Shiva lingams that encircle the sacred hill, are ancient relics, with a history spanning centuries. It is believed that visiting and worshiping these lingams offers significant spiritual benefits. For those who undertake Arunachala Girivalam during the full moon nights each year, praying at these Asta Lingams is a central part of their pilgrimage experience.
History of Arunachalam Temple:

Getting to Arunachalam:
By Road: Numerous buses run from Chennai and major towns and cities throughout Tamil Nadu. More buses are available from Bangalore and Tirupati also.
By Train: The closest railway station to Arunachalam Temple is Tiruvannamalai, located approximately 10 kilometers from the temple.
